Award-winning journalist and broadcaster Steph McGovern co-hosts The Rest Is Money with Robert Peston, exploring the economic issues that affect our everyday lives. Working in financial journalism for over two decades - including eight years on BBC Breakfast - Steph has travelled all over the UK covering economic news, broadcasting live from over five hundred businesses and speaking to everyone from factory workers to FTSE CEOs.

Before her on-air career, Steph was the lead producer of financial news for the BBC, working alongside then Business Editor Robert Peston at the forefront of the award-winning coverage of the credit crunch and banking crisis. That grounding - real events, real stakes, real-world consequence - continues to define her style: practical, clear, and relentlessly focused on what things actually mean.

Away from daily news, Steph spent over three years hosting her eponymous BAFTA-nominated series Steph’s Packed Lunch - a live daily magazine show on Channel 4 that broadcast over five hundred episodes after starting in her house in lockdown. Her presenting work also includes Pocket Money Pitch (CBBC), Made in Great Britain (BBC Two), five series of Shop Well For Less (BBC One), four series of Watchdog, and Easy Ways to Live Well with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. She is a regular face on the BBC, fronting shows such as Have I Got News For You and Crimewatch, with two new programmes launching in 2026.

Originally from Middlesbrough, Steph started as an apprentice engineer at Black & Decker where, aged nineteen, she won Young Engineer for Britain before studying at University College London and joining BBC Radio 4 as a researcher. Outside broadcasting, she co-owns businesses including the retailer Gootopia and the fitness studio ClimbAHub. A crime fiction fan, Steph published her debut novel Deadline with Pan Macmillan in 2025 and is writing her second thriller. She is also involved in community and education projects in the North East and is a former champion Irish dancer.
