Tom Holland is an award-winning historian, translator and broadcaster whose work has helped redefine how mass audiences understand the ancient world and the foundations of modern life. The author of landmark books including Rubicon, Persian Fire, Millennium, In the Shadow of the Sword, Dynasty, Dominion and most recently Pax - his definitive account of Rome’s golden age - Holland is known for turning scholarship into storytelling with cinematic clarity.

Alongside his writing, he has adapted Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides and Virgil for the BBC, and has translated Herodotus and Suetonius for Penguin Classics. His broadcasting spans BBC Radio 4’s Making History and television documentaries on subjects ranging from the Islamic State to dinosaurs - always bringing serious ideas into reach without ever dumbing them down.

He is co-presenter of The Rest Is History, one of the world’s most popular history podcasts, and has held senior cultural roles including Chair of the Society of Authors and Chair of the British Library’s PLR Advisory Committee. He is a trustee of the British Library and the British Museum, an honorary fellow of Queens’ College, Cambridge - and, in the words of The Times, “a leading English cricketer.”
